I’m Jensen Dean, a Brisbane-based artist who also loves entertaining. Growing up in Brisbane, Australia, I quickly made a name for myself in the street art scene as a teenager. The competitive nature of graffiti pushed me to evolve at a pace that many artists take decades to achieve, and it was in this high-pressure environment that I developed a deep understanding of color theory.
In recent months, my vibrant portraits and unique online videos have gained significant attention, leading to rapid growth on my social media platforms. My artwork is now collected by buyers around the world, including celebrities, renowned musicians, and several UFC superstars.
Beyond painting, I have a passion for film and design. Right now, I’m channeling my creativity into my new fashion brand, working on some bold designs and filming a series of fun advertisements that reflect my creative ideas.

IN MY COURSE YOU WILL LEARN
1. INTRODUCTION
In the first module, you’ll get an overview of the course and meet me, Jensen Dean. We’ll set realistic goals to keep you motivated and on track, ensuring steady progress in your artistic journey. You’ll also gain a solid introduction to acrylic painting, learning about the medium’s unique properties and how to make the most of it. Lastly, we’ll explore how to create an inspiring and productive workspace, along with the right mindset to stay encouraged and push through creative challenges.
2. MATERIALS & STARTING TO PAINT
In this module, we’ll cover all the essential supplies you need to get started, from recommended brands to must-have tools for achieving the best results. You’ll learn how lighting impacts your artwork and how to choose palettes for your paint. We’ll dive into blending techniques, mastering light and dark transitions, and practicing smooth color application. You’ll also explore transparency and layering to add depth to your work. Finally, we’ll discuss palette knives - why they’re useful and how to incorporate them into your painting process.
3. COLOUR
Colour is one of the most powerful tools in an artist’s arsenal, and in module 3, we’ll explore why colour theory is essential to creating impactful artwork. You’ll learn the fundamentals of colour theory, including the use of colour wheels, mixing techniques, and how to achieve harmony in your palette. We’ll analyze how different artists, from Brisbane graffiti artist Sofles to the Dutch master Van Gogh, have used colour to define their styles. You’ll also discover the importance of colour branding in modern art, looking at examples from rapper Central Cee, the Ferrari brand and more. Lastly, we’ll break down the differences between cheap and expensive pigments and explore how colour influences emotion and storytelling in your paintings.
4. LIGHT & SHADOWS
Light and shadow are the key to creating depth, realism, and mood in your artwork. In this module, we’ll break down how light behaves and how to use it effectively in painting. Through case studies of master artists, you’ll see how they achieved stunning effects with light and shadow. You’ll also learn why using pure white isn’t always the best approach and how to create natural highlights. We’ll explore shadows as reflections of light and practice these concepts with a hands-on ball painting exercise. Finally, we’ll explore how to paint depth using proportions, vanishing points, and colour, to give your artwork a sense of space and dimension.
5. PAINTING QUICKLY
Speed painting is an essential skill that helps you build confidence, capture energy in your artwork and make the most of your time. Here, you’ll learn why painting quickly is beneficial and how to develop this skill without sacrificing quality. We’ll explore the importance of using reference pictures effectively and learn how to buy the right canvas size according to your reference picture's ratios. You'll also practice identifying key light sources by circling the light in a reference image so that you can use the blocking technique. Additionally, we’ll tackle common painting challenges with problem-solving techniques and learn how master artists like Rubens and Da Vinci incorporated efficiency in their work. To wrap up, I’ll share my personal “cheat codes” to speed up your process while maintaining precision and impact.
6. PORTRAIT PAINTING
In module 6, we focus on creating captivating and expressive portraits. We’ll start by establishing the background colour, allowing the portrait to come forward naturally. You’ll then learn how to sketch the outline of your subject, ensuring accurate proportions. The real magic happens with skin tones - learning to mix and apply them will bring life to your subject. You’ll practice painting the essential facial features, including noses, ears, eyes, and hair, with a step-by-step approach. Once we’ve covered the basics, I’ll show you how to focus on painting crucial features and adding expression to the rest of the portrait. This module emphasizes a balance between precision and creativity, ensuring your portrait feels both realistic and engaging.
7. FINISHING TOUCHES
In this final module, we bring everything together by completing a full portrait painting. We’ll start with project planning, recapping the steps from concept to completion. I’ll walk you through a demonstration of painting a portrait, focusing on fine details and techniques that add depth and realism. You’ll learn how to enhance your work with finishing touches like fine lines, highlights, and your final signature. We’ll also cover important aspects of preserving your art, such as varnishing to protect your work for years to come. To wrap up, I’ll guide you on next steps for continued growth in your artistic journey and introduce the business side of art, including social media marketing and selling, so you can share your art creations with the world.
